Forum 4: Poster Prep

Poster

When deciding on a movie poster that I wanted to recreate, I knew right from the start that I wanted to recreate the Mean Girls poster. However, I wasn't sure what exactly I wanted to do with it in order to spice it up. My mind was automatically drawn to, "Why not make it High Point themed?". I figured there was no better way to do so without putting President Nido starring as the main character to showcase the "College Edition" spinoff I had hoped to accomplish. I had such a fun time working on this project and although there are some things I think I could have improved on, I thoroughly enjoy how it turned out in the end!

Behind the Scenes of the Making of the Poster

Many steps were taken during the process of this poster. Prior to beginning the poster, I watched the videos from weeks five and six to gain a better understanding of how to use the tools I would need. "Cycling through the blend modes" and "Removing unwanted details with content-aware fill" were by far my favorite videos and had the most impact on my poster. After watching each of the videos, I then began to work on my poster. The first step I took was taking Regina's (Nido is in place of her now) body out of the picture by using the Quick Selection Tool and taking her out of the image. However, doing this took away some areas of Karen (To the left of Regina) and Gretchen's (To the right of Regina) legs off as well as parts of their shoulders. I fixed this issue by using the Quick Selection Tool on a picture of Nido and placing him overtop. I used the Free Transform option and scaled him so he covered some parts and I skewed him to make the emphasis on him by pushing his shoulder out. I then took the Clone tool and used this to put some of Gretchen's shirt, hair, and leg back. I also did the same thing with Karen on the other side. With Cady (Lindsay Lohan) I had originally taken her out of the background because I wanted more room to work with. However, as my final step I pulled up the background again and used the quick selection tool on her to place her back into the image. I turned her into a smart object so I could move her around the image to where she would fit best.

Speaking of text, this is where I had the most fun with the project. I used the first image in my "before" pictures as a guide to achieve almost the same exact text. It took me a long time of playing around with fonts until I found the closest one. I changed the size of space between the letters to try to make it look more like the original poster. I moved the "Mean Girls 3" text over top of Cady and wanted to make it all tie in by adding "College Edition" below it. I also decided to have Nido's name in place of Tina Fey. I achieved the small movie script by actually using the Quick Selection Tool and copying and pasting it onto my poster. However, the background of the original poster and mine were not the same so I used the tools I learned in the "Cycling through the blend modes" video and applied "Lighten" on my image. This got rid of the background on the original image, but the text was harder to read due to being on a lighter background. I then applied an adjustment layer and used the Brightness/Contrast tool and increased the contrast of the text to make it stand out more.
